چکیده

This paper presents a new mathematical technique for the identification of two rheological model functions (namely, the hindered settling and effective solid stress functions) obtained from concentration profiles measured during the centrifugation of flocculated suspensions. We consider both a rotating tube and a basket centrifuge at a given angular velocity, and assume that the radius (i.e., the distance to the center of rotation) is the only spatial coordinate. The governing equation is a non-standard strongly degenerate parabolic partial differential equation for the solids volume fraction as a function of radius and time whose coefficients involve the model functions. We present a numerical technique f e ©

A Comparative Study on Performance of Two Aerobic Sequencing Batch Reactors with Flocculated and Granulated Sludge Treating an Industrial Estate Wastewater: Process Analysis and Modeling

In this study, the performance of two aerobic sequencing batch reactors (SBR) in removing carbon and nutrient (N & P) from Faraman’s industrial estate wastewater (FIW) with flocculated and granulated sludge were compared. The comparison study was performed by varying two significant independent variables (aeration time and mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS)). The experiments were co...

Applications of the phenomenological theory to several published experimental cases of sedimentation processes

In one space dimension, the phenomenological theory of sedimentation predicts the sedimentation–consolidation behavior of a flocculated suspension in dependence of two constitutive functions describing its material behavior, the solids flux density (or hindered settling function) and the solid effective stress. These functions are assumed to depend only on the local volumetric solids concentrat...

A new approach to define batch settling curves for analyzing the sedimentation characteristics

The results of batch settling tests (BST) are used to investigate settling behavior of solids suspension, which contribute to sizing thickeners. Conventional methods in analyzing BST on the basis of visual and graphical procedures lead to sub-optimally sized and selected thickeners. A computational approach based on quantitative analysis of BST can be beneficial. About 300 settling experiments ...

Equilibrium-state Density Profiles of Centrifuged Cakes of Flocculated Suspensions

Many advanced ceramics are formed by colloidal consolidation using techniques such as sedimentation, centrifugation, or pressure filtration. In all these, the minimization of density variations of various colloidally-consolidated cakes has not been examined systematically until recently. Schilling et al.' used y-ray densitometry to study the density variations in a sedimented cake and showed th...

The role of polymer in dispersion stability and film formation of silica/PVA suspension

Film formation of particle/binder/solvent system is of importance in various applications to produce battery, display, electronic components and so on. Because dispersion stability is a crucial issue for defect-free final products, many attempts have been carried out to analyze and control the microstructure of the suspension. In this study, The effect of polymers on dispersion stability and fi...
